DCR bone tissue saw

A surgical tool for opening blocked tear ducts.
The challenge:
Tears that don’t get disposed of through the ducts can be an annoying problem for those affected. There can be many explanations for this condition, but blocked tear ducts is the most common reason.

The condition is usually treated by first probing the tear duct. If the symptoms remain, a surgery called DacrioCystoRhinostomi (DCR, or ”Toti-operation”) will be performed.

The operation creates a new channel for tears, leading from the tear sack, and into the nasal cavity. This is made possible due to an opening created by the surgeon in the nasal bone. To ensure that the new tear duct stays open, the walls of the opened tear sack is stitched together with the mucous membrane. In other words, it is desirable to make the hole in the bone tissue in such a way that the mucous membrane inside the nose remains intact and thus permitting better incision.

Solution:
The tool is an electrically driven bone cutter. In place of a rotating saw blade or drill, the tool has an oscillating pipe drill. This allows the mucous membrane within the bone to remain intact. The engine is separated from the handle, and connected through a flexible shaft. A tool for suction of bone fragments can be attached to the device.
